In October 2024, Genomics England launched the Generation Study, which aims to see 100,000 babies screened for more than 200 rare genetic conditions at birth.

This is a national study with samples being taken at maternity departments across the country. Central and South Genomics is helping to deliver this study by:

  • working to support NHS Trusts across our region who are currently recruiting to the study, or in the process of setting up to start recruiting
  • supporting our regional results co-ordinators who are responsible for co-ordinating the return of condition suspected results to parents
  • engaging with our local communities to raise awareness of the study, striving for equitable and accessible recruitment of participants from diverse backgrounds
  • raising awareness of the study amongst our partners, support groups, clinicians and other healthcare staff across our region

As part of this work, we’re carrying out research to ensure we’re engaging with communities across our region. We’ll be providing a space and opportunity to learn more about the study and its benefits, and crucially, to share your views on genomic research and shape healthcare within your area.

This is an opportunity to contribute your views on cutting-edge scientific research and have them heard by leading healthcare organisations.

This is a collaboration between Central and South Genomics, Genomics England and STRAP Consultancy. The research will take place on 20 May 2025 from 09:30-11:30 at the MAC, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham. Participants will be reimbursed for their time.

We’re looking for people who meet the following criteria:

  • Live in the Birmingham area
  • Good English listening and speaking skills
  • Open to participating in research

We’re not asking you to sign up just yet – but if you’d like to express your interest in joining this community research, please click here to submit your details or email [email protected] and we’ll be in touch. The research will be fully explained to you prior to joining and we’ll take you through all the relevant details on your consent and what that means for you. Please note, we aren’t recruiting for the Generation Study here – this is a separate research project to hear from our communities.
